Ziagen (Abacavir)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Abacivir is a antiviral agent specifically indicated for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus. It belongs to a class of agents call nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI s). It prevents the virus from reproducing by interfering with production of viral DNA. Abacavir should never be used alone to treat HIV+ or AIDS patients.

Side Effects

The most significant side effect is the occurrance a allergic reaction with the following symptoms: fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Another side effect is severe tiredness. If you should notice any of those symptoms, stop the drug immediately and contact your physician. Another side effect is lactic acidosis and increased liver size - this side effect is more likely to occur in obese women.

Drug Interactions

None reported to date but this is a new drug and experience with using abacavir with medications other than other drugs to treat HIV+ is limited.

Usual Dose

The usual dose is 300 mg (1 tablet) two times a day with or without food.
