Zetia (Ezetimibe)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
for the treatment of elevated cholesterol. It acts by inhibiting the absorption in the intestine of cholesterol resulting from dietary intake. Although it acts on the wall of the intestine to inhibit absorption the exact mechanism of action is not known. It is commonly prescribed along with other cholesterol-reducing agents for an additive effect.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are: upper respiratory tract infections (13%), headache (8%), muscle pain (5%) and sinusitis (5%).
Drug Interactions
Provigil may increase blood levels and thus side effects of the tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline, diazepam, propranolol, and phenytoin requiring a dose decrease of those drugs to avoid side effects.
Cautions and Contraindications
Simultanous use with cholestyramine will significantly lower the blood levels of Zetia. Gembibrozil will also increase blood levels of Zetia. Because of a potential significant drug interaction patients also taking cyclosporin should be carefully monitored for side effects to either frug. Zetia is contraindicated in pregnant and nursing women.
Usual Dose
10 mg (one tablet) each day with or without food.
