Zerit (Stavudine)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Zerit is a antiviral agent specifically indicated for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus. It belongs to a class of agents call nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI¹s). It prevents the virus from reproducing by interfering with production of viral DNA. Zerit should never be used alone to treat HIV+ or AIDS patients.

Side Effects

The major side effect is peripheral neuropathy which manifests itself numbness, tingling, or pain in the feet or hands. Should this occur, either discontinuation of Zerit or a reduction of dose is necessary. Other less serious side effects are: headache, chills, diarrhea, rash and muscle pain. Because many of these effects are similar to the serious hypersensitivity reaction seen with Ziagen (abacavir) the two drugs should not be started together as it will be impossible to distingush which drug is producing the adverse effect.

Drug Interactions

None reported -- but if other similar drugs such as Hivid and Videx are used concomitantly, the peripheral neuropathy is more likely to occur.

Cautions and Contraindications
