Zanaflex (Tizanidine)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Zanaflex is used to reduce the muscle tone and spasms associated with multiple sclerosis. It acts to reduce spasticity by blocking the alpha-2 receptor sites on the nerves responsible for muscle function.
Side Effects
Among the more common side effects are: dryness of the mouth, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, low blood pressure, and a slowing of heart rate.
Drug Interactions
The use of alcohol with Zanaflex will increase side effects and thus should be avoided. The addition of oral contraceptives to Zanaflex therapy will increase blood levels of Zanaflex by 50% in increase side effects.
Cautions and Contraindications
None
Usual Dose
Initially - 4 mg every 6-8 hours increasing to a maximum of 36 mg daily or until side effects prevent any further increase.
Note
If mixed with other drugs such as albuterol in nebulizer it should be used within 1 hour.
