Viread (Tenofovir)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Viread is indicated in combination with other antiretroviral drugs for the treatment of infections due to the HIV-1 virus. Tenofovir inhibits the activity of the viral reverse transcriptase. This inhibition reduces the efficiency of viral reproduction thus lowering the blood viral load. Viread should never be used alone to treat HIV infections.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are: rash (15%), diarrhea (11%), headache (10%), fatigue (7%), nausea (8%) and depression (7%).
Drug Interactions
If Viread is added to existing didanosine (ddi) therapy, the blood levels of ddi will increase significantly increasing the side effects of that drug including pancreatitis and peripheral neuropathy. If co-administered they should be given with a light meal. Atazanavir and lopinavir/ritonavir will increase Viread blood levels and may lead to an increase in side effects. Viread will decrease the blood levels of atazanivir.
