Viracept (Nelfinavir)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Viracept is an antiviral drug specifically approved for the treatment of infections due to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It acts by inhibiting protease (a protease inhibitor), an enzyme required for release of new virus from cells in which it has been reproducing. Viracept should never be used alone to treat HIV+ persons.
Side Effects
The most clinically significant side effect is diarrhea which may occur in up to 25% of those taking Viracept. Other side effects include: redistribution of body fat which can result in central obesity, "buffalo hump", breast enlargement and a rounding of the face.
Drug Interactions
The following drugs should not be taken if you are taking Viracept - Amiodarone or quinidine, rifampin, derivatives of diazepam (Valium), or Cisapride (Propulsid). The following drugs may need to have their doses lowered as Viracept can slow their metabolism and result in increased blood levels and side effects: anticonvulsants, other protease inhibitors such as Crixivan, and oral contraceptives.

Usual Dose
The usual dose is 750 mg (3-250 mg) tablets three (3) times a day.
