Vesicare (Solifenacin)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Vesicare is indicated for the treatment of overactive bladder with symptoms of urinary incontinence, urgency, and urinary frequency. It acts by partially blocking the muscarinic receptors on the bladder which are responsible for urinary bladder contraction.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: dry mouth (28%), constipation (13%), urinary tract infections (5%), blurred vision (5%), dyspepsia (4%) and nausea (3%).

Drug Interactions

Ketoconazole may increase blood levels of Vesicare significantly and increase side effects.

Cautions and Contraindications

Patients with impaired renal function will require a reduction in dose. As with other anticholinergic drugs, Vesicare is contraindicated in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma. Use with caution in patients with acquired electrocardiogram Q-T prolongation.

Usual Dose

Initially 5 mg daily increasing to 10 mg daily if absence of side effects allow.
