Vaniqa (Eflornithine)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Vaniqa is indicated for the reduction of excess facial hair in women. The efficacy of Vaniqa has only been studied on the face and area under the chin. It acts by inhibiting the enzyme, ornithine decarboxylase, an enzyme necessary for the synthesis and rate of growth of hair. Marked improvement should be visible after 8 weeks of treatment. Continued therapy is required to prevent hair regrowth.

Side Effects

Side effects include: transient stinging or redness on applied area. Do not apply to abraded areas of the skin.

Usual Dose

Apply thin layer to area and rub in thoroughly. Do not wash area for at least 4 hours. Use twice daily at least 8 hours apart. You should continue to use other hair removal techniques as needed in conjunction with Vaniqa being applied at least 5 minutes after hair removal. Cosmetics or sunscreen may be applied over the treated areas after the area has dried.
