Valtrex (Valacyclovir)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Valtrex is an antiviral drug which is used to treat infections due to the herpes simplex virus (Types 1 and 2) and herpes zoster. When converted into its active metabolite, acyclovir, it prevents viral replication by interfering with DNA mediated reproduction.
Side Effects
The most significant side effects are: nausea (15%), headache (14%) and vomiting (6%).

Usual Dose
Herpes Zoster - 1 Gm. every 8 hours. Genital Herpes -Initial 1 Gm. every 8 hours; Recurrence, 500 mg every 12 hours; Suppression - 1 Gm. every 24 hours.
