Urocit-K (Potassium Citrate)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Urocit-K is indicated for the prevention and treatment of kidney stones where alkalinazation (increase pH) of the urine is of value. The kidney stones where this may be of value are: those due to calcium and uric acid in the urine and lessens the chance for stone formation.
Side Effects
Mostly gastrointestinal including: abdominal discomfort, vomiting, diarrhea and loose stools, and nausea. These side effects can be substantially lessened if the drug is taken with meals.

Cautions and Contraindications
Do not use with potassium sparing diuretics such as triamterene or spironolactone as an increase in blood potassium with sometimes fatal results can occur. Drugs which can slow gastrointestinal transit time such as anticholinergics may increase the gastrointestinal side effects of this medication.
Usual Dose
The usual dose is 10-20 meq (2-4 tablets) four tablets a day after meals or after a snack.
