Ultram (Tramadol)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Ultram is a centrally acting analgesic and it is used to treat moderate to severe pain. It has been proposed to have two mechanisms of action. The first is to bind to receptors in the brain which when stimulated, produce lessening of pain. The other mechanism is to suppress the uptake of norepinephrine into certain areas of the brain which may reduce the perception of pain intensity.
Side Effects
The most significant side effects are: dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, constipation, sweating and itching.
Drug Interactions
Ultram will potentiate other central nervous system depressants and should be used cautiously if given to those on monoamine oxidase inhibitors which are occasionally used to treat depression.
Cautions and Contraindications
This drug is contraindicated in those with a history of seizures as it will reduce seizure threshold.
Usual Dose
50-100 mg (1-2 tablets) every 4-6 hours. Do not exceed 400 mg (8 tablets) in 24 hr.
