Trimethoprim

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Trimethoprim is indicated for the treatment and prevention of urinary tract infections. The mechanisms of action is by blocking a critical step in protein synthesis of bacteria, the production of tetrahydrogolic acid.

Side Effects

Almost 75% of the side effects are dermatologic with a rash the mst common. This can progress to a severe exfoliative type thus should a rah occur, trimethoprim shoud be stopped immediately. The other significant side effect is nausea diarrhea is rare.

Drug Interactions

Trimethoprim may affect or be affected by the anticonvulsants such as phenytoin and phenobarbital. It may increase the blood level and side effects of methotrexate. If used with triamterene there is a greater chance of blood abnormalities.

Cautions and Contraindications

Use with caution in those with renal disease. Should you notice increased bleeding of your gums while taking trimethoprim please contact your physician.

Usual Dose

Adults and children > 12 years of age - 100 mg every 12 hours.
