Thioridazine (Mellaril)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Thioridazine is a phenothiazine drug which is approved for use in the treatment of depression, psychoses, and behavioral problems in children characterized by combativeness and hyperexcitability.

Side Effects

Although most side effects are mild, the following may occur occasionally drowsiness which will disappear with continued therapy, dryness of the mouth, blurred vision and constipation may occur. Although very rare, a side effect characterized by involuntary muscle movements and muscle rigidity may occur. This is a reason for discontinuation of thioridazine. Occasionally, there may be a drop of blood pressure upon starting which will produce dizziness. This problem can be reduced by going from a lying position to sitting before standing.

Drug Interactions

Use with antihistamines may increase side effects.

Cautions and Contraindications

Use with caution in the elderly.

Usual Dose

Psychosis: starting 50-100 mg three times a day increasing to a maximum of 800 mg/day if necessary. For depression: 25 mg three times a day. Children:starting dose should be 25 mg two-three times a day.
