TEMODAR (Temozolomide)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Temodar is indicated for the treatment of adults with refractory anaplastic astrocytoma. When taken orally, it is converted in the body to its active form MTIC. MTIC is believed to exert its anti-tumor effect by alkylation of DNA thus preventing the growth of the tumor tissue.

Side Effects

Side effects include: nausea (53%), headache (41%), fatigue (tiredness) 34%, convulsions (23%), transient paralysis on one side of body(18%), muscle weakness (13%) and dizziness (12%). Depression of bone marrow elements may occur and careful monitoring of white blood cell count is strongly urged.

Usual Dose

The usual starting dose is 150 mg/M2 once daily for 5 days per 28 day cycle. If neutrophil and platelet counts are normal, the dose can be increased to 200 mg/M2 5 days per 28 day cycle.
