Tasmar (Tolcapone)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Tasmar is indicated for the adjunct treatment of Parkinson's disease. It is used along with levodopa to improve the plasma levels (and presumably the brain levels) of levodopa. This leads to a more sustained effect of levodopa and a greater effect on the signs and symptoms of Parkinson9s disease.
Side Effects
Among the more common side effects are: Postural hypotension which manifests in dizziness upon standing, diarrhea (15-20%) and occasionally Tasmar can produce fibrotic lesions in the lung. To avoid this latter effect your physician should perform a baseline chest X-ray with follow-up check X-rays at regular intervals. Nausea if it occurs will usually disappear with continued therapy. There may be an initial increase in dyskinesia and dystonia.
