Tapazole (Methimazole)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Tapazole is indicated for the treatment of hyperthyroidism. It acts by blocking the sysntesis of thyroid hormones.

Side Effects

These include: nausea, epigastric distress, fever, joint pains and edema (swelling of extremities). Rarely Tapazole may produce bone marrow depression, liver damage, or a disorder in insulin production leading to hypoglycemia - all of these potential serious side effects can best be prevented by blood testing.

Drug Interactions

An interaction exists between Tapazole and oral anticoagulants (warfarin, dicumerol) with an increase in anticoagulant effect when Tapazole is added to existing anticoagulant therapy.

Cautions and Contraindications

Tapazole is contraindicated in nursing mothers.

Usual Dose

The usual dose is 15 to 40 mg daily in three divided doses for mild to moderate hyperthyroidism.
