Synthroid (Levothyroxine, T4)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Synthroid is used to treat hypothyroidism (low thyroid function). Hypothyroidism is characterized by lethargy, weight gain, and drowsiness. Synthroid acts by providing one of the thyroid gland products which is used by the body to control basic metabolism.

Side Effects

Side effects are unusual but a transient loss of hair during the first few months of therapy may occur.

Drug Interactions

Absorption of Synthroid may be decreased by aluminum hydroxide, cholestyramine resin, ferrous sulfate, and sucralfate. The addition of Synthroid to existing therapy with warfarin (Coumadin), oral antidiabetic drugs, and digoxin may decrease the effectiveness of those drugs.

Cautions and Contraindications

In presence of thyrotoxicosis and adrenal insufficiency.

Usual Dose

The dose is individualized and dependent on thyroid function studies performed in your physicians office. The most common dose range for adults is 0.05-0.150 mg each day.
