Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim (SMZ-TMP, Bactrim, Septra)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

SMZ-TMP combines a sulfonamide drug with trimethoprim. When used together they inferfere with two pathways for the production of folic acid by bacteria thus preventing the formation of proteins required for bacterial growth. This combination is used for the treatment of urinary tract infections, otitis media in children, chronic bronchitis, and other infections whose causative bacteria is susceptible to this combination. ough and pharyngitis(3%).

Side Effects

The most clinically significant side effects are: increased sensitivity to the sun, nausea, dizziness, and a rash. Rarely the rash can become very severe so it is important to stop SMZ-TMP at first sign of a rash.

Cautions and Contraindications

Do not use if you had a previous reaction to sulfa drugs.

Usual Dose

The usual dose is one tablet two times a day for adults. The pediatric dose for the suspension dosage form is 40mg/kg of the SMZ/24 hrs in divided doses.
