Strattera (Atomoxetine)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Strattera is indicated for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperreactivity disorder (ADHD). It has been approved both for adults and children. The mechanism of action is unknown but may be related to the selective inhibition of the nerve take of norepinephrine.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are: headache (27%), upper abdominal pain (20%), dry mouth (20%), insomnia (16%), decreased appetite (14%) and nausea (11%). In men, erictile disturbances and impotence may occur rarely.
Drug Interactions
Use with caution in patients taking oral albuterol or similar beta-2 blockers as an increase in heart rate or blood pressure may occur. A reduction in Strattera dose may be necessary in patients taking the antidepressants fluoxitine or paroxitine. If taking a MAO inhibitor for depression, the MAO inhibitor must be stopped 14 days prior to starting Strattera.
Cautions and Contraindications
Do not use if you had a previous reaction to sulfa drugs.
Usual Dose
Children and Adolescents: 0.5 mg/kg daily increasing every 3 days to a maximum of 1.2 mg/kg. Adults: Initial:40 mg daily increasing if necessary to a maximum of 100 mg daily.
