Starlix (Nateglinde)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Starlix is indicated as monotherapy for the treatment of maturity onset (Type 2) diabetes. Starlix acts by improving the sensitivity of cells to the effect of circulating insulin on liver, muscle and fat cells. It is of particular value in overcoming the insulin resistance characteristic of Type 2 diabetes.
Side Effects
Among the common side effects are:Upper respiratory tract infections (10%), back pain (4%), flu-like symptoms (4%), dizziness (4%), joint pains (3%), and diarrhea (3%).
Drug Interactions
Drugs such as non-steroidal antiflammatory agents may displace Starlix from blood proteins which would temporarily increase the blood level of Starlix and possible produce hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Other drugs such as thiazide diuretics, steroids, and thyroid supplements may affect blood sugar levels independent from Starlix but require an adjustment of Starlix dose.
Cautions and Contraindications
Type 1 diabetes and when there is diabetic ketoacidosis.
Usual Dose
120 mg three times a day with meals.
