Stabalon (Tianeptine)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
This antidepressant acts by increasing serotonin uptake in the brain (the SSRI antidepressants available in the USA work the opposite way). Tianeptine appears to be as effective as other antidepressants with a side effect profile lower than the tricyclic antidepressants and sililar to the currently USA-available SSRI’s. It may be effective in patients with depression due to chronic alcoholism and in elderly patients.
Usual Dose
Tianeptine is taken by mouth once daily.
