Seroquel (Quetiapine)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Seroquel is indicated for the treatment of bipolar mania and schizophrenia. The specific mechanism of action is not known although Seroquel does stimulate a number of brain neuroreceptors with the dopamine receptors potentially involved with its anti-schitzophrenia activity.

Side Effects

Common side effects include: headache (21%), agitation (20%), drowsiness (18%), dizziness (11%), dry mouth (9%) and constipation (8%).

Drug Interactions

Phenytoin and thioridazine can increase the metabolism of Seroquel and require an increase in Seroquel dose to maintain effectiveness. Ketokonazole can reduce the metabolism of Seroquel and require a reduction in dose to avoid side effects.

Cautions and Contraindications

Seroquel may produce a drop in blood pressure upon standing resulting in dizziness. Should this occur getting up slowly is recommended. Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures.

Usual Dose

100-400 mg daily with a maximum of 800 mg daily.
