Salagen (Pilocarpine)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Salagen is indicated for the treatment of inadequate salivary flow . This can occur as a result of radiation therapy or Sjogrens disease. Salagen acts through the cholinergic nervous system to stimulate glandular secretion.
Side Effects
The most significant side effects are: swetating (40%), runny nose (10%), headache (10%), increased urinary frequency (10%), flushing (9%), and chills (4%). Night vision may be impaired.
Drug Interactions
Salagen should be used with great caution with beta blockers used to treat angina and hypertension (metoprolol, propranolol, atenolol) because of the possibility of inducing an abnormal heart rhythm.
Cautions and Contraindications
Those with a history of asthma.
Usual Dose
One tablet (5 mg) three times a day.
