Rowasa (Mesalamine)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Rowasa is indicated for the treatment of inflammation of the colon or rectum (inflammatory bowel disease). The mechanism of Rowasa is to prevent the formation by the intestine of chemicals (prostaglandins) which initiate the inflammatory process.

Side Effects

This product is used rectally and the side effects include: headache (9%), intestinal gas [flatulance] (6%), and abdominal pain (6%).

None

Cautions and Contraindications

Those with a history of asthma.

Usual Dose

Suppository - one suppository two times a day - try and retain for three hours. Enema - one instillation once a day at bedtime and retain until the morning. The enema should be shaken well.
