Risperdal (Risperidone)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Risperdal is indicated for the treatment of psychotic disorders, particularly schizophrenia. It acts by antagonizing the effect of regular neurotransmitters on the dopamine type 2 and serotonin type 2 receptors.
Side Effects
The major side effects are: insomnia (26%), agitation (22%), extrapyramidal symptoms including involuntary movements (17%), headache (14%) and anxiety (12%).
Drug Interactions
Risperdal may antagonize the effects of the Parkinson's disease drug levodopa. Carbamazepine (Tegretol) may decrease the effect of Risperdal.
Cautions and Contraindications
Use with caution in presence of low blood pressure as Risperdal may produce low blood pressure with dizziness when getting up.
Usual Dose
1 mg two times a day initially increasing to a maximum of 6 mg/day.
