Rilutek (Riluzole)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Rilutek is indicated for the treatment of amyotropic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Its mode of action in slowing the prgression of ALS is unknown.
Side Effects
The most significant side effects seen in approximately 10-15% of those using this medication are: weakness, nausea-with and without vomiting, and abdominal pain. The most significant side effect is damage to the liver and monthly assessment of liver function is recommended.
Drug Interactions
Although none have been reported, the metabolism of Rilutek suggests that drugs such as caffeine, theophylline, and amitriptyline may increase blood levels and increase toxicity.
Cautions and Contraindications
Those with a history of liver disease.
Usual Dose
50 mg (1 tablet) every 12 hours.
