Ridura (Auranofin)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Ridura is indicated in the treatment of adult rheumatoid arthritis. It contains gold in its structure which is a requirement for its antiinflammatory activity. The mechanism of action id not known.

Side Effects

The most significant side effects are: a rash (35%), diarrhea (20-30%), mouth ulcers (15%) and anemia (3%). The rash, if it occurs, can be aggravated by sunlight. Rarely, other more dangerous side effects can occur and include kidney damage and bone marrow depression. Your physician will want to see you on regular intervals to detect these reactions early and act accordingly.

Cautions and Contraindications

Ridura is contraindicated in those with a history of an allergic reaction to any gold preparation.

Usual Dose

The usual dose is 3 mg (one capsule) two times a day.
