Retrovir (Zidovudine)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Retrovir is a antiviral agent specifically indicated for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus. It may either be used alone for prevention of viral transmission from HIV+ pregnant women to their newborns (vertical transmission) or used in combination with other antiviral agents in the treatment of HIV+ persons or clinical AIDS. Retrovir should never be used alone to treat HIV+ or AIDS patients.

Side Effects

The most significant side effect is the occurrance of anemia. This is much more significant in those with clinical AIDS who have impaired bone marrow function due to the HIV virus. Other side effects include: weakness, headache, nausea and vomiting and general malaise (weakness).

Drug Interactions

Caution should be exercised when used with ganciclovir (Cytovene), alpha-interferon or other agents which can suppress bone marrow function. Drugs such as probebecid, fluconazole, and phenytoin may increase the blood level of Retrovir thus requiring a reduction in dose to avoid toxicity.

Cautions and Contraindications

Caution and a reduction in the usual dose should be employed in presence of significant renal disease or anemia.

Usual Dose

The usual dose is 200 mg (2 capsules) three (3) times a day.
