Rescriptor (Delaviridine)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Rescriptor is a antiviral agent specifically indicated for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus.
It belongs to the class of agents called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. It is always used in combination with other agents, most commonly a protease inhibitor and a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor such as zidovudine (AZT). Rescriptor should never be used alone to treat HIV+ or AIDS patients.
Side Effects
One of the more common side effects is a skin rash which occurs in 15-20% of patients. The rash is self-limiting and will disappear in 2 weeks or less.
Drug Interactions
Rescriptor will increase the blood levels and effects of the following other drugs: protease inhibitors such as indinavir and saquinavir (there are no data on nelfinavir [Viracept]), benzodiazepine sedatives such as diazepam and alprazolam. Calcium channel blockers used to treat hypertension and angina, cisapride (use to treat certain gastro-intestinal problems), quinidine and warfarin. Anticonvulsants such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, and phenobarbital as well as the anti-tuberculosis drugs, rifabutin and rifampicin will decrease Rescriptor blood levels and activity.

Usual Dose
The usual dose is 400 mg (4-100 mg tablets) three (3) times a day. The tablets may be placed in water and consumed as one dose for ease of administration. If this option is chosen add 4 tablets to 3 ounces of water (90 ml or 6 tablespoonfuls), allow to stand for 2-5 min then stir to mix.
