Rasagiline (Agilect, Azilect)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Rasagiline is a new dugs which inhibits the enzyme MAO-B located I nthe brain. This inhibition allows the increase of both dopamine and phenethylamine (PEA) in the brain. This accumulation of those two neurotransmitters apparently reduces the production of toxic oxygen radical species and in addition, raises levels of brain dopamine.
Side Effects
Side effects are mild and consist rarely of anorexia, weight loss, vomiting and balance disturbances.
Note
Rasagiline and some of its analogues may also be of value in Alzheimers disease although studies on its effectiveness in that condition are limited.
