Provera (Medroxyprogesterone)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Provera is a progestational agent used to treat symptoms associated with menopause. It, along with estrogens such as Premarin, helps to maintain hormonal balance.
Side Effects
Changes in appetite, headache, cystitis-like syndrome, fatigue, and some loss of scalp hair. The most significant, but rare, side effect is the occurrence of blood clots which can migrate to the lung producing damage. The symptom of this serious complication is a pain in the chest associated with shortness of breath. Should this occur, contact your physician immediately.

Usual Dose
For secondary amenorrhea, 5-10 mg daily for 5-10 days. For postmenopausal therapy, 2.5-10 mg each day.
