Protriptyline

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Protriptyline is an antidepressant agent. Its mode of action is unknown.

Side Effects

Confusion, constipation, difficulty in urination, blurred vision, and nausea and vomiting. Rarely reported effects include: seizures, incoordination, fever, and impotence.

Drug Interactions

Should not be used with any other tricyclic antidepressant.

Cautions and Contraindications

None

Usual Dose

Adults - 15-40 mg/day divided into 3-4 doses. In elderly patients, doses should only exceed 20 mg/day if cardiovascular statue of patient is under careful monitoring.
