Protopic (Tacrolimus) Ointment

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Protopic ointment is used for the treatment of eczema (atopic dermitis). Although its mechanism of action is unknown, when tacrolimus is given by mouth it suppresses the immune system. Thus, the action when applied to the skin may be to prevent the inflammatory response associated with eczema. Over 70% of patients experience a greater than 50% improvement in symptoms after using the ointment for 12 weeks.

Side Effects

The most common side effect is skin burning (approx. 30%), followed by itching (approx. 25%) and flu-lid symptoms (approx. 15%). The incidence of these side effects is somewhat higher in children than in adults. These side effects lessen with continues use of the ointment.
