Prednisone
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Prednisone is a corticosteroid which is used to treat a variety of conditions characterized by the presence of inflammation. Among these are: bronchitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and various dermatoses. It is also use as an immune system suppressant and thus is useful in treating leukemias, organ transplant rejection, and inflammatory bowel disease.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are: fluid retention, increased blood sugar, development of gastrointestinal ulcers, muscle weakness, impaired wound healing, and menstrual irregularities. Prolonged use will produce a swelling of the face (cushinoid appearance).

Cautions and Contraindications
Avoid use in presence of infections and those undergoing vaccinations.
