Pravachol (Pravastatin)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Pravachol is used to reduce blood cholesterol levels. It does so by blocking a pathway (HMG-CoA) in the making of cholesterol. The reduction of cholesterol ranges from 15-25%.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are: rash, headache, and heartburn. There was a small but statistically significant increase in the incidence of flu-like symptoms in patients taking Pravachol.
Drug Interactions
Cholestyramine - although the use of the two drugs will reduce cholesterol significantly more than either drug alone - if used together, Pravachol should be take either one hour before or four hours after cholestyramine to assure adequate absorption.

Usual Dose
The starting does is 10-20 mg once daily with the dose range from 10-40 mg daily.
