Pletal (Cilostazol)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Pletal is used to alleviate the symptoms of intermittent claudication. It acts by producing a dilation of the veins thus increasing blood supply to the legs. Another mechanism may be to inhibit platelet aggregation thus preventing clotting in leg arterioles and veins.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are: palpitation (feeling of irregular heart beat-10%), headache (34%), runny nose (10%), sore throat (10%), and diarrhea (19%).
Drug Interactions
Pletal will slow the metabolism of omeprazole (Prilosec) perhaps requiring a dose reduction of omeprazole. Both erythromycin and diltiazem will slow the metabolism of Pletal and a dose reduction may be necessary.
Cautions and Contraindications
Pletal is contraindicated in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF).
Usual Dose
One (100 mg) tablet taken two times a day 1/2 hr before or 2 hrs after breakfast and dinner.
