Periostat (Doxycycline)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Periostat is an antibiotic which in the lower dose than used to treat infections is used for peridontal disease as an adjunct to teeth scaling and root planning. When used as an adjunct, there was a significant decrease in bleeding on probing, a decrease in pocket depth, and a decreased loss of attachment level. The mechanism of action is to inactivate collagenase, an enzyme associated with peridontal disease.
Side Effects
Side effects include sun sensitivity which can result in significant sunburn, skin rash, and heartburn.
Drug Interactions
Tetracyclines can depress prothrombin activity and should be used with caution in those taking anticoagulants. This class of antibiotics will prevent penicillin-like antibiotics from being effective.

Usual Dose
The usual dose is one capsule (20 mg) two times a day taken one hour prior to morning and evening meals.
