Pentoxifylline (Trental)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Pentoxifylline is indicated for the treatment of intermittant claudication (reduced blood flow the the legs with accompanying pain). It acts by decreasing the viscosity of blood thus making it less likely that clots will reduce blood supply to the extremities.
Side Effects
The most common side effects which are mild are <2% are: nausea, abdominal cramps, and dizziness.
Drug Interactions
Use with caution when add to therapy of other anticoagulants.
Cautions and Contraindications
Recent cerebral hemorrhage.
Usual Dose
One tablet (400 mg) three times a day with meals.
