Penlac Nail Lacquer (Ciclopirox)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Penlac is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate fungal infections of the finger- and toenails due to the organism, Tricophyton rubrum. The mechanism of action is to chelate specific metals which are necessary for the normal metabolism of the fungi. The result may be the accumulation of toxic metabolites in the organism resulting in its death.
Side Effects
The only side effect is a mild and transient erythema (redness and swelling) of the area to which the Penlac is applied.

Usual Dose
Penlac should be applied evenly over the entire nail plate daily at bedtime with the applicator brush provided with the solution. Patients should file away (emery board) loose nail material and trim nails every 7 days. Do not remove the applied solution but apply the new application over the previous one. Up to 48 weeks of application may be required for complete cure. Do not use nail polish or other nail cosmetics during Penlac treatment.
