Parnate (Tranylcypromine)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Parnate is an antidepressant which acts by inhibiting monoamine oxidase (MAO). This appears to increase the brain levels of catecholamines. A deficiency of catecholamines may be partly responsible for depression.

Side Effects

The most significant and dangerous side effect is the sudden occurrance of very high blood pressure - this is accompanied by a severe headache unresponsive to mild analgesics. Other common and less serious side effects are: dizziness, sleep disturbances, tiredness, constipation, weight gain, and impotence.

Drug Interactions

There are many drugs which cannot be taken with Parnate. In particular, tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline, cold preparations which contain ephedrine,There are many drugs which cannot be taken with Parnate. Cautions and Contraindications

When used with antihypertensives (drugs to lower blood pressure), excessive low blood pressure may occur. Avoid tyramine containing foods and herbs such as liver, cheeses, yeast extract, beer and wine, excessive chocolate and caffeine, and broad bean products. Injestion of these products can produce a sudden and dangerous increase in blood pressure.

Usual Dose

The usual dose is 30 mg a day in divided doses.
