Oxybutynin (Dithropan)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Oxybutynin is an antispasmotic drug which produces relaxation of the bladder. Thus, it decreases urgency and the frequency of both incontinent episodes and voluntary urination., The mechanism of action is to inhibit the effect of acetylcholine on the bladder muscle thus producing bladder relaxation.

Side Effects

Dry mouth (60%), constipation (13%), sleepiness (12%), and headache (10%).

Drug Interactions

Do not use with any other medications which also have anticholinergic effects: those include antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil) and imipramine (Tofranil).

Cautions and Contraindications

Do not use in presence of bladder outflow onstruction or narrow angle glaucoma.

Usual Dose

The usual dose is 10-30 mg/day in divided doses.
