Nystatin
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Nystatin is both a fungistatic and fungicidal antibiotic. It acts by binding to sterols in the cell membrane of the organism thus preventing cell division and multiplication. Nystatin is indicated for the treatment of fungal infections due to Candida albicans.
Side Effects
The most common side effects are: mild oral irritation and diarrhea. Occasionally a severe rash may develope which if it occurs, mandates that Nystatin be stopped immediately.

Usual Dose
The usual dose is 5,000,000 units(1 tablet) to 1,000,000 unit2 (2 tablets) by mouth three times a day. Treatment should be continued for at least 48 hours after clinical cure to prevent a relapse.
