Nubain (Nalbuphine)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Nubain is a synthetic narcotic agonist-antagonist which is used for the treatment of moderate to severe pain. It acts by blocking the mu pain receptor.

Side Effects

The most common side effect is drowsness which is very common (36%). Others include: sweating (9%), nausea (6%) and dizziness (5%). Nubain may produce constipation and difficulty in urination. This is particularly likely if used with another drug such as any phenothiazine (Thorazine, Phenergan) with anticholinergic effects.

Drug Interactions

Additive effects can be expected if used with other sedatives or morphine-like analgesics i.e. Percocet.

Cautions and Contraindications

Previous allergic reaction to morphine-like medication.

Usual Dose

Nubain is given by intramuscular, subcutaneous, or intravenous routes. The usual dose is 10 mg for a 70 kg individual given every 3-6 hours. The dose should be adjusted downward for chronic usage.
