Nortryptyline (Aventyl)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Nortryptyline is approved for use in the relief of symptoms of depression It is also used when taken at bedtime to assist in sleeping. It is a tricyclic antidepressant. The mechanism of action may be to interfere with transport, release and storage of catecholamines in the brain.

Side Effects

Side effects include: dry mouth, blurring of vision, decreased tearing which can affect contact lens comfort, difficulty in urination (particularly for men with prostatic hypertrophy), confusion and occasionally constipation.

Drug Interactions

Central nervous system due to alcohol may be increased. Use with caution other antidepressants particularly those known as SSRI's such as Prozac. Potentiation of side effects may occur when combined with certain antihistamines such as diphenhydramin (Benadryl) and chlorpheniramine (Chlortrimeton).

Cautions and Contraindications

Use with caution in presence of psychiatric diseases.

Usual Dose

For depression - 25 mg 3-4 times a day, for sleep - 25-50 mg at bedtime.
