Nitrofurantoin

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Nitrofurantoin is a bactericidal agent which is used primarily to treat tract infections. It is most effective against strains of Ecoli, S. aureus, and E.faecalis. It acts by inhibiting a variety of cell processed necessary for bacterial survival and growth. Among these are: cell division, cell metabolism, and protein synthesis.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: weakness, dizziness, headache and nausea. Rarely with chronic administration (>6 months) damage to the lungs can occur which can produce shortness of breath. Pulmonary function may be compromised unless the drug is stopped immediately when this occurs.

Cautions and Contraindications

Do not use in neonates.

Usual Dose

50-100 mg four times a day with meals. For long term suppressive, 50-100 mg daily at bedtime (see pulmonary side effect!)
