Neurontin (Gabapentin)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Neurontin is indicated as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures in adults with epilepsy. The mechanism of action I not known at this time.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are: drowsiness (20%), dizziness (17%), weakness (11%), nysagmus (involuntary jerking of the eyes) (8%) and abnormal vision.

Drug Interactions

Antacids may decrease absorption of Neurontin thus Neurontin should be taken at least two hours after antacid use. Neurontin may produce a false-positive result with dipstick tests for urinary protein.

Cautions and Contraindications

Neurontin is fetotoxic in animal models thus its use in pregnancy should be avoided if possible.

Usual Dose

The starting dose is 300 mg three times a day increasing if necessary to a maximum of 1800 mg daily.
