Naltrexone (Revia)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Naltrexone is a pure opiod antagonist thus it is used for the treatment of both narcotic addiction and alcoholism. It occupies the receptor sites in the brain where narcotics and alcohol exert their effects thus preventing their euphoric effect.

Side Effects

Common side effects include difficulty sleeping, anxiety, abdominal pain, nausea, joint and muscle pain and headache. Although very rare, there have been occasional reports of liver damage. Significant abdominal pain, appearance of very yellow urine or appearance of yellow in eye sclera (whites). Should this occur, contact your physician immediately.

Drug Interactions

When used with thioridazine increased lethargy and somnolence may occur. Avoid opiod containing non-prescription drugs such as codeine containing cough preparations.

Cautions and Contraindications

THERE SHOULD BE AT LEAST A 7-10 DAY PERIOD WITHOUT OPIODS BEFORE Naltrexone is used.

Usual Dose

50 mg (One tablet) once daily.
