Metronidazole
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Metronidazole is indicated for the treatment of anaerobic infections due to trichonomiasis in both males and females. It may also be used for the treatment of other anaerobic infections such as those due to bacteroides. Once absorbed into the organism metronidazole is believed to act creating intracellular free radicals which in turn produce oxidation of critical proteins and bacterial death.
Side Effects
The most common adverse effects are gastrointestinal and include nausea (12%) and loss of appetite and a metallic taste. Rarely, numbness of the extremities and precipitation of seizures mat occur.
Drug Interactions
Metronidazole may potentiate the effects of oral anticoagulants requiring an immediate dose adjustment downward of that class of drugs. The anticonvulsants phenytoin and phenobarbital may decrease blood levels and lessen the effectiveness of metronidazole. Metronidazole may increase the blood levels and toxicity of lithium.
Cautions and Contraindications
Alcohol should be avoided during treatment and for 3 days following discontinuation of metronidazole.
Usual Dose
The usual dose is 500-725 mg two times a day for 7 days.
