Metoclopramide (Reglan)

Purpose of Medication and Method of Action

Metoclopramide is indicated for the treatment of reflux gastritis, persistant hiccoughs, to prevent nausea and vomiting, and diabetic gastroparesis (slowing of stomachemptying due to diabetes damage to stomach nerves). Metoclopramide acts by increasing stomach and intestinal contractions.

Side Effects

Diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, decreased alertness. Occasionally aching in legs, panic-like attacks, nervousness or irritability.

Drug Interactions

When taken with sedatives, anthistamines, and alcohol metoclopramide may increase the sedation side effects of those agents.

Cautions and Contraindications

Patients who are allergic to procaine may also be allergic to metoclopramide. Children may be unusually sensitive with side effects of muscle spasms affecting the head and face.

Usual Dose

10mg 30minutes prior to symptoms (usually before meals and at bedtime). Children:2.5 to 5 mg three times a day before meals.
