Mavik (Trandolapril)
Purpose of Medication and Method of Action
Mavik is a drug used to treat hypertension. It acts by interfering with the action of angiotensin, a naturally produced substance which can increase blood pressure. It falls into the pharmacology class of being an angiotensin II receptor antagonist
Side Effects
There most common are: cough (35%), dizziness (23%), low blood pressure (11%), dizziness (6%, and gastrointestinal pain (heartburn). There is a rare side effect called angioedema which manifests itself as swelling of the face or extremities, eyes, lips and tongue. This can be severe enough to interfere with breathing.
Drug Interactions
Use with potassium sparing diuretics such as spironolactone (Aldactone), triamterene (Dyrenium) and amiloride can increase potassium in blood to dangerous levels.
Cautions and Contraindications
Use in pregnancy can result in damage and possibly death to the developing fetus.
Usual Dose
The usual starting dose is 1 mg daily (whites) and 2 mg daily (blacks) increasing to 4-8 mg daily.
